10 Reasons Why you Should Eat Blueberries

Its blueberry season in British Columbia. Yippee! They are by far my favourite berry. Not only do they taste delicious, but they are one of the easiest fruit to prepare and serve. There’s no peeling, pitting, coring or cutting. You can just pop them right in your mouth. They have few natural pests, (other than birds), so pesticides are generally unnecessary if you grow them. They are a powerhouse among fruits.
10 reasons why you need blueberries in your diet:
- Blueberries protect against ovarian cancer
- Blueberries protect against colon cancer
- Blueberries protect against muscular (eye) degeneration
- Blueberries consumption lowers cholesterol and total blood lipid levels, possibly affecting symptoms of heart disease.
- Blueberries promote gastrointestinal health
- Blueberries can help relieve both diarrhea and constipation
- Blueberries are a source of vitamin C
- Blueberries are high in fibre
- Blueberries are a low glycemic-index carbohydrate
- Blueberries have shown promise in addressing the effects of aging
My family is fortunate to live so close the blueberry fields there are fresh stands every few yards. Now only if they could come up with a quieter method for scaring the birds…
I toss blueberries on my cereal, yogurt and salad. If I leave a bowl out for my kids, they will be gone by the end of the day. Of course, there is always blueberry pie, blueberry cobbler, blueberry pancakes and our personal family favorite blueberry muffins.

About the Author: I am a gym junkie but always find myself looking for new ways to stay active. Blueberries are probably the ‘most perfect’ healthy food … and they taste great! I wish I could grow them where I live. My husband doesn’t like most of the healthy berries because he doesn’t like to have seeds stuck in his teeth. I’ve convinced him to eat blueberries (just don’t tell him about the skin stuck in his teeth
)
Great post! Blueberries are going on my grocery list today. I love blueberries in post workout vanilla protein shakes, protein pancakes, and mixed in with greek yogurt.
I absolutely love blueberries, but had only focused on antioxidants as a health benefit. I think I’ll toss some into my Greek yogurt this morning.
My son had his birthday party at a blueberry farm on Friday. It was a great way to celebrate being 5! The kids picked for about 45 minutes (from HUGE bushes – they crawled all around and had a blast – not including the ones they ate while picking, 9 kids managed to pick close to 9 lbs of berries), we played some games w/ balloons as giant blueberries, read the book Jamberry and talked about all the great ways they can eat the blueberries they picked. It was SO much fun and I’m certain that they’ll all return to pick with their families again and again. Hooray for blueberries!
Yum, Blueberries! I purchased a blueberry plant earlier this year. I’m not expecting a lot this year, but hopefully I can keep it alive long enough to get a nice crop next year (along with the golden raspberries). I’ll have to try out the recipe! Thanks for posting.
I’m so glad to read this post. We grow blueberries in our garden and eat them all summer long. Fantastic Fruit!!
