Sensa and Sensability – Review of the Sensa Weight Loss System
By Crazy Legs on Oct 14, 2009 with Comments 2
Can smelling food help make us feel full?
I’m putting Dr. Alan Hirsch’s “scentsational” Sensa Weight Loss System to the test to find out.
We all know that some smells – think bread baking in the oven – can make our mouths water and our stomachs growl. But can smells do the opposite as well? Can they help make us feel full? That is the question that Dr. Alan Hirsch, the neurological director of the Smell and Taste Treatment and Research Foundation of Chicago has been working on for over two decades. He’s conducted and published over 180 research studies on sensory phenomena. Out of his research, he has developed the Sensa Weight Loss System which you may have read about in the New York Times, Good Housekeeping, WebMD, Women’s Health, Lifestyle, Woman’s World, or elsewhere.
Sensa is unlike any other weight-loss program I’ve ever tried. It is a 6-month system of “Tastants” (it looks like white powder) that are sprinkled on foods. The tastants are supposed to make users feel full faster, stay satisfied longer and thus lose weight. Sensa is not a diet; there are no prepackaged meals, stimulants, drugs or diuretics to deal with.
So how does it work?
The Sensa system uses the senses of smell and taste to control appetite. Although many people think the feeling of hunger or fullness comes from our stomachs, Dr. Hirsch says it is actually governed by the “satiety center” in the brain. When Sensa Tastants are sprinkled on food, it is said to trigger this satiety center, so we feel satisfied with less food.
Sounds good in theory so I’m putting it to the test!
If you want to learn more about Sensa visit the Sensa website as I’m not going to focus too much on what is already covered in detail there. Instead, I want to know if it works! So I’ve committed to trying Sensa out, which involves sprinkling the “tastants” on my food at every meal (and every snack!). Follow my progress here on girlgetstrong.com – my first update will be published next week when I’ll tell you how the last two weeks have been going (yup, I’ve already started using it but I’m not spilling any secrets yet, you’ll just have to wait!).
Want to try it along with me? You can try Sensa out for yourself for free by clicking here. If you take advantage of the free trial, I’d love to hear your thoughts on it too. I’m looking forward to seeing if I can lose weight without changing what I eat. It is definitely a different approach to weight loss!
Stay tuned!

I hate to say but I am not on board with this. I definitely will be curious to see how it works for you. I think just by slowing down eating & paying attention to chewing all the food, resting in between bites, less mindless eating & giving the stomach a chance to feel full, that may do the same thing. Plus just eating healthier, whole foods and just moving around… be active. What happens when you stop using this stuff or do you have to use it forever? How do you learn how to manage the food on your own once you stop?
For me, it is not always smell BUT, hey, I have not tried it. Keep us posted.
