Review-elete Electrolyte Add-In

I had the opportunity to try out elete Electrolyte Add-In, which is a liquid you add to your water to replenish your electrolytes when you are exercising. I am a big flavored water drinker but rarely replenish my electrolytes with sports drinks due to all the added sugar in them.
Why are electrolytes important to our bodies? According to elete, here are is some more interesting information about electrolytes:
They help our body absorb water and control fluid balance. Although drinking water during exercise is critical to avoid dehydration, drinking plain water that is not fortified with electrolytes can lead to a serious condition called hyponatremia. Hyponatremia occurs when blood sodium concentration falls to extremely low levels, which can result in seizures, coma, and death. Electrolytes not only prevent dehydration, but they’re critical to muscle function, nerve conduction, energy production and flow, and heart function. For the endurance athlete, a major benefit of electrolytes is that they help prevent muscle cramps, which can impede performance.
Athletes must be careful to avoid a shortage of electrolytes during training: Loss of electrolytes through sweat must be replaced, but most sports drink and electrolyte replacement supplements, powders, and gels ignore the fact that the body also uses an additional balance of minerals beyond sodium. One essential electrolyte is magnesium, which is necessary for energy production, muscle contraction, cardiovascular and respiratory function. Another important reason athletes need to supplement with a balance of electrolytes is that if minerals (electrolytes) become depleted, negative effects like cramping occur. Magnesium-not sodium-can help prevent muscle cramps.
I did find that there a slight after taste if you used only water with your elete, but since I always flavor my water, it was a non-issue. You have to be sure to use the proper amount of elete or you might wind up with a chlorine taste. Be sure to read the bottle for instructions.
My husband, also tried elete and he loved it. He was sure he could stay on the elliptical at full speed at least 10 minutes longer without the usual fall in energy. He uses it plain and does not mind the taste.
PROS:
- Great way to get added electrolytes when working out
- no added sugar or carbs
- also contains potassium, magnesium and chloride
- during your workout you get small bursts of electrolytes instead of one big gulp drinking a sports drink
- way cheaper than buying sports drinks
- no added colors or flavors
CONS:
- It does have a taste that you may or may not like
We will both be continuing to add elete to our water. I would love to take it to a further test such as in extreme heat or doing a marathon.
We are going to be giving away gift packages of elete to 2 lucky GGS readers on Monday so stay tuned!
- t-shirt (as modeled by me)
- water bottle
- 2 elete pocket sized
- 2 elete re-fills
