Steve Nash Sports Club is the First Fitness Facility in Canada to Reduce Carbon Emissions with Exercise Bikes
The green trend hit a few years ago, with high profile personalities like Steve Nash leading the way. At the 2007 opening of his first sports club in Vancouver, the six foot four athlete arrived in a compact electric car sponsored by BC Hydro. His second club, in Richmond, is the first fitness club in Canada to harness the power of human exercise and reduce carbon gas emissions. Steve Nash himself sought out the Green Revolution Technology which connects the exercise bicycles to the main power grid, generating clean electricity. The technology made its Canadian debut at the Richmond Steve Nash Sports Club opening in 2009.
Each cyclist on the 28 bikes controls and monitors their individual renewable energy output, while SNSC can track the total energy produced on The Green Revolution website. 20 cyclists have the potential to produce up to 3.6 Megawatts of renewable energy a year: the equivalent of lighting 72 homes for a month, while also reducing carbon emissions by over 5000 pounds.
Jay Whelan, founder and president of The Green Revolution Inc is the recipient of Connecticut Governor M. Jodi Rell’s “Climate Change Leadership Award”. The Green Revolution’s ‘human energy’ fitness technology can be installed on all leading brands of indoor cycling equipment with compatibility on all cardio fitness equipment. How cool is that? I love hearing about new ways to go Green! Thanks Jennifer.
About the Author: I am a gym junkie but always find myself looking for new ways to stay active. You can usually find me hanging with my 2 kids at the soccer field, ice rink, dance studio or swimming pool. Other than that, I am usually at my computer, watching ellen, or making some fab dish for my hubby.

Where’s Don Harbich in that spin class. I hear he is there every day!
Add this to my Christmas wish list! I wish we had a spin room at our little gym to start with, but to be able to add the energy creation element… well paint me green and call me tickled pink!
I always thought that we should be able to harness all our hard work! A big “well done” to these two organisations for making this move!
I have always wondered about being able to do that while knowing the that the treadmill is usually the only piece of cardio equipment that needs a plug.
Nicely done SNSC. Will they be going in the other clubs – eg SNFW in North Burnaby?
