8 Ways to Boost Mental Health

May 9, 2017Iradine Deano1602 views

You might not realize it but mental health is just as important as your physical health. While most of us are too preoccupied by keeping our bodies healthy we sometimes forget that keeping our minds healthy is just as important and as necessary.

According to the World Health Organization, mental health is defined as “the emotional and spiritual resilience, which enables us to enjoy life and survive pain, suffering and disappointment.  It is a positive sense of wellbeing and an underlying belief in our and others dignity and worth.  It is influenced by our experience and our genetic inheritance.”

If you think your mental health needs a boost we’ve compiled several ways to keep your mental health at the top of its game.

So Smile and Be Happy!

Life is beautiful and it’s too short to waste it over regret, sadness, hate, depression or anger.

Be Grateful

You will always have something to be grateful for every day. To boost your mental health we suggest you practice being grateful.

One way of doing that is by diarizing three (or more if you have more to be thankful for) things that you are grateful for each day.

Whether it’s that slice of cake your mom left you in the fridge or the perfect weather outside or the fact that you lost a pound after a day of dieting. Realizing how blessed you are by being grateful is good for your soul and it’s good for your mental health as well.

You can also check out this amazing app, it’s a gratitude journal in case you’re always losing your pen and paper.

Have Coffee

Studies show that drinking coffee decreases the risk of depression among women. If you’re a coffee lover then all the more reason to rejoice! Coffee not only gives you an energy boost, it’s actually good for your mental health!

Coffee tastes amazing as well but if you’re the type of person who has difficulty sleeping then you can switch to a decaffeinated coffee. It has the same taste only that it’s free from caffeine.

Go Travel!

Don’t be a slave to your work. Always strive to have balance in everything that you do.

Yes, paying the bills is a priority and we’re not saying you resign so you can travel the world.

What we’re saying is strike a balance, make use of your vacation leaves and really go on vacations when need be.

Don’t lock yourself up in your house when there’s no work. Enjoy your benefits and travel, meet new people, experience new cultures, try exotic food and be merry because at the end of the day, it’s your mental health that truly matters.

Know Your Strengths

Being aware of your strengths is very important because this can help build up your confidence. So the next time somebody tells you otherwise, you can brush it off because you know yourself better and you are fully aware of what you are capable of.

Remember, other people can impact your mental health by the words they say so make sure that you guard yourself because you’ll never know who you’ll bump into and what they’ll say to you.

Get Enough Sleep

Getting enough sleep energizes you when you wake up and so it means you get more things done.

Feeling accomplished makes you happy and when you’re happy it means your mental state is more than okay.

When you’re not in the mood then it’s likely you didn’t get enough sleep last night.

Get into the habit of going to bed 30 minutes before your actual bedtime so you can doze off right on schedule.

Show Love and Give Love

Show and give love when you can. Don’t be selfish, appreciate the people who care for you, thank them, show them that you love them and it will come back to you. Good relationships lead to a healthier and happier life.

Exercise

Exercising is like hitting two birds with one stone. You become physically healthy and mentally healthy at the same time.

When you exercise your body releases a chemical called endorphin and this can instantly uplift your mood.

So when you’re feeling stressed out and you want to punch someone, hold that thought! Put on your rubber soled shoes and hit the gym because right after a good workout you’ll feel much better.

Write It Down

Has something or someone been bothering you lately? Pent up feelings can be unhealthy, which is why are suggesting you let it out by writing it down.

Go to the nearest bookstore and find a fancy journal and a good pen and start writing down your thoughts.

Writing can be very therapeutic most especially for people who have difficulty expressing themselves through words or people who struggle with confrontations.

Final Take

Life is a rollercoaster, sometimes you’re up and sometimes you’re down. But there are a certain number of people who have a hard time getting up once they’ve hit rock bottom. Don’t let this happen to you. Rise above whatever it is that’s pulling you down and find your own unique ways to be happy.
