The landscape around Jericoacorara is as fragila as it is beautiful, and in 2002, it was declared a protected national park to prevent the region from being ravaged further by environmental degradation. It is here that one finds the Pousada Rancho do Peixe resort, nestled on the pristine Prea Beach.
The resort was designed by Gui Mattos, a Brazilian architect well known for his eco-friendly projects. To wit, Pousada Rancho do Peixe is built from only natural local materials in a simple, traditional design that perfectly compliments the tropical verdure outside. Walls are constructed with clay bricks, while wooden floors and thatch roofs create an welcoming, laid-back atmosphere.
The eco resort offers only 16 bungalows – eight are scattered along Prea Beach, while the rest are further inland, surrounded by coconut trees. Measuring 80 sq m each, they are fitted with one king-size bed and two single beds, allowing them to sleep four guests comfortably. Outside, a large deck and verandah with hammock create a relaxing space to enjoy cool sea breezes. Inside, local handcrafted textiles in bright, cheerful prints contrast with rich timber floors and furniture.
Cuisine is another big draw. Open all day, the restaurant serves Brazilian specialties with a Mediterranean twist. No pesticide or preservative filled dishes here; guests dine on produce from the resort’s own organic farm, while fish is bought daily from local fishermen.
Watersports enthusiasts have even more reason to make the trip – Prea Beach boasts some of the best kite- and wind surfing opportunities in the world. Beginners need not worry about missing out, as experienced instructors will get them out on the waves in no time. Those who prefer staying on land can explore the beach or meander through the sand dunes via horseback, while cultural buffs will be delighted with Jericoacoara town’s bohemian vibes, just a short buggy ride away.
Guests wanting to take full advantage of the plentiful sunshine and crisp air should head to the pool for a few laps. There is also a beach bar, where mixologists serve refreshing cocktails. The paradisal setting tempts one to forget all about the outside world, but those who must stay connected will appreciate the complimentary WiFi.
Situated on conservation land, Rancho do Peixe plays a major role in local conservation efforts. The resort uses only biodegradable detergents and soaps, so as to minimize water pollution. Water is recycled wherever possible, and the resort is involved with community projects such as supporting the local farmers and setting up sanctuaries for rare birdlife.
With the pride that Rancho de Peixe takes in caring for its guests as well as for the environment, it is little wonder that it remains steadily on the list of Brazil’s top 150 hotels.
